The concept of ‘halal’ and ‘haram’ has always been part of Islamic teaching. It is deeply integrated into the Muslim community’s way of life. ‘Halal’ is the Arabic term for permissible or lawful. It is a term used by the Muslim community to describe products which are suitable for consumption or use by the community. The opposite of halal is haram. Haram means prohibited or unlawful.
Halal products are those that act in accordance with the religious rites and observe Sharia law. This means that these products do not contain any pork, alcohol, blood, carnivorous animals or animals that were dead before slaughter. These restrictions ensure that the products are in compliance with ethical standards.

Halal-certified products are seen as a way to bridge faith and lifestyle choices for Muslims. Of the circa 8 billion global population, there are around 1.8 billion people that follow Islam. Over the next few decades, it is predicted that the Muslim community will grow to around 2.6 billion by 2050. The fast-growing Muslim population has created a rise in demand for halal-certified products and services. This is not to say that these products only target the Muslim population. With an increasing number of consumers who are gravitating toward ethical lifestyle choices, halal-certified products are breaking into the cosmetics and personal care industry.

In October 2014, Indonesia’s House of Representatives passed a law on Halal Product Assurance which monitors the raw materials, handling and certification of halal products. The law required all halal consumer products to be halal-certified and labelled by 2019 but the enforcement period has been extended and will be rolled out in phases based on product categories. The implementation timing for personal care brands now starts from Oct 2021 and companies will have a grace period of up to Oct 2026 to comply with the Halal labelling law. New applications for halal certification are made to the BPJPH ( Badan Penanggulangan Jaminan Produk Halal) which is their Halal Product Assurance Organising Agency. The validity period of the halal certification has been extended from two to four years. The law provides protection and assurance of halal products in Indonesia and aids the Muslim community in making accurate decisions on halal and haram brands.
