Artichoke is one of the world’s oldest cultivated vegetables, grown by the Greeks and the Romans in the heyday of their power. It was said to have aphrodisiac effect. It has been used in medicine as a tonifying and regenerating ingredient and its actives makes it a good antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
In France, the plant was also employed in traditional medicine for its draining effect.
The plant is a vegetable rich in flavonoids and phenolic acids and it is also a good source of Niacine (Vitamin B3), magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and copper. Recent studies have shown strong antioxidant properties, with equivalent results to red berries (like cranberry, blueberry, blackberry) for ORAC Test.
