Kiwi is the fruit of a vine that looks a bit like a grapevine. It originates from China, where it has been eaten for over 2,000 years. The Hayward kiwifruit is the most widely grown kiwi variety in the world. It produces large, tasty, sweet fruit with green flesh from mid-October to mid-November and keeps well. For centuries, the kiwi was used as medicine rather than as a fruit. Known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as Xiao Yang Tao (“Wonder fruit”), the kiwi is valued due to its high vitamin C content which is up to eight times higher than in citrus fruits. Numerous trees were also planted in New Zealand where the fruit was renamed "kiwi", which is a reference to the bird that is the symbol of New Zealand and shares some similarities with the fruit. Kiwifruit has an excellent reputation as a fruit rich in vitamins and minerals.
