Lotuses, or ‘Sacred Lotuses’, are exotic aquatic plants. They are native to southern Asia, in particular India, where fossil traces dating back to the Pleistocene epoch, have been discovered. They are cultivated in the lakes and swamps of several regions throughout the world, for instance China, which is its main producer. Lotuses prefer tropical climates; however, they also adapt to temperate climates.
The whole plant is famous in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.
Lotuses are important in Southeast Asian diets. Most parts of the plant are edible. The fruits are eaten candied, grilled, in pastries, etc., while the rhizome is popular as a vegetable for its nutritional qualities, and the fragranced flowers are used to flavor tea. Its large leaves are used in salads or as traditional plates.
Lotuses are considered sacred in many eastern religions. In India and Vietnam, the flowers are national emblems. In the Hindu religion, lotuses represent the cradle of the universe, the “Mother of all creations”. Brahma, the main God in the Hindu pantheon, is believed to have been born in the heart of a Lotus flower. In Buddhist symbolics, Lotuses represent the pureness of the body, word, and spirit.
In flower symbolics, lotuses are the image of pureness, perfection, and vitality.
The oily extract of lotus flowers contains some terpenoids with softening properties.
