Ivy has been credited since ancient times with many curative properties and was recommended by Dioscorides to treat various illnesses. In the Middle Ages, ivy also belonged to the druidic Pharmacopoeia which particularly acknowledged it as a cathartic, vermifuge, febrifuge, and sudorific. In the past, Ivy sap was used as a powerful remedy for headaches. Cazin recommended ivy leaf decoction applied in gauzes on wounds and burns. In traditional medicine, Ivy leaves are also used to treat gout and rheumatisms. As an herbal Tea, Ivy is a popular emmenagogue. As a symbol of immortality, Ivy was the plant of Osiris, the Egyptian god who protected the dead. It was also assigned to Attis, the god of lost-and-recovered plants, as symbol of eternal rebirth. In the language of flowers, Ivy symbolises faithfulness and eternal love. The oily extract of ivy leaves contains sterols with soothing and regenerating powers.
