Originally from Europe, the linden tree grows wild, but it is also very widely planted in gardens and along roads.
Linden trees have been used since time immemorial in folk medicine to treat a range of ailments. Pliny described the soothing effects of bark vinegar on skin ailments. Many medicinal treatises praise the Linden tree's beneficial effect on epilepsy, paralysis, vertigo, and oedema. Since the 16th Century, a royal decree issued in France by the Minister Sully instructed Linden trees be planted along roadsides and in front of churches. The flowers harvested were then reserved for hospital use.
Linden is an excellent remedy against stress, excitability, and insomnia. It is used to reduce blood pressure and to calm irritations and inflammations of the throat. Thanks to its emollient and calming qualities, linden is used to calm irritated skin.
Endowed with a rather uncommonly long life, it is a tree with a long history and has been the subject of numerous legends.
Linden is also a sacred tree dedicated to Venus, the linden represents femininity and is the symbol of love.
