The cabbage rose is currently cultivated in temperate and warm regions such as the Mediterranean basin (Maghreb, Lebanon, Syria, etc.), Europe (France, Holland, etc.) and South Asia. Cabbage Roses are harvested before they bloom so that the petals do not fall off by themselves, and preferably in the morning when their essential oil content is highest. Already practised by the Romans and Greeks in Antiquity, the cultivation of roses developed in the West at the time of the first Crusades, in the 13th century. At that time, the rose was attributed with quasi-miraculous actions and was recommended against all sorts of affections. The petals of perfumed roses are traditionally distilled to obtain both the essential oil and rose water. It was also considered in many Arab countries as an anti-tubercular medicine. In the past, a syrup made from perfumed rose petals was also prepared and was known for its mild laxative and depurative properties. Avicenna, a 10th century philosopher, and physician claimed that the rose had the virtue of increasing mental alertness and brain power. The rose is the symbol of Love, tenderness, and sweetness.
