Arnica is common in whole Europe to southern Russia. Since the Middle Ages, Arnica has been qualified as an exceptional natural remedy against external wounds. The first mention of any use of arnica was by Saint Hildegarde of Bingen in the 12th Century. Its leaves and flowers were used as compresses and decoctions to resorb haematomas. In the 18th Century, the popular "Arnica Tincture" appeared and became famous for its effect on bruises and blows, even when they weren’t recent. It was the subject of a great number of medical theses which specified then that arnica was a remedy acting rapidly and in small doses. This discovery was to make Arnica one of the first plants to be used in homeopathy. Present in the French and European Pharmacopoeia, Arnica preparations are used in phytotherapy against inflammations of the skin, the mouth and connective tissue diseases. Arnica is also proven to have antimicrobial, anti-irritant and antirheumatic effect. Arnica preparations increase the capillary blood supply as well and are used in compresses, massage preparations and hair care products. The oily extract of arnica flower contains mainly fatty acids, essential oil and phytosterols with antioxidant, emollient, smoothing and antibacterial properties.
