The tiare tree is a small shrub found in most Pacific islands where it is particularly fond of coral soils. The best-known use of Tiare is in the preparation of monoi. The flowers, picked in bud, are macerated in refined copra oil for several days. Monoi is very well known for shining the hair and softening the skin and its use has spread far beyond Polynesia. Tiare is also used in many traditional remedies. In the form of an infusion or maceration, the flower is used locally to relieve earaches, styes, mosquito bites, migraines, etc.
The tiare flower is the symbol of Tahiti and the traditional ornament of Tahitian women. Tahitians use it to make superb crowns or necklaces that they wear during feasts, and which serve as a welcome gift. Tiare even has its own feast day on December 6.
The oily extract of tiare flowers contains essential oils, triterpenes and fatty acids with smoothing and purifying powers.
