Traditionally, cranberry juice is known to have antibacterial activity especially against Escherichia coli. In traditional North American herbalism, cranberry has been used to remove toxins from the blood. The crushed berries were applied to tumors and wounds. The berries were recognized as a treatment for vitamin C deficiency. The unique and hard growing conditions of the cranberry allow the plant to produce a wide variety of essential nutrients. Cranberry fruits have also astringent properties.
