Sustainable Manufacturing of Personal Care Ingredients

Croda Global Pressures

Reducing Emissions:
By 2030, we will achieve our Science Based Targets (SBTs) by reducing our emissions in line with limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels, maximising the use of renewable energy in our operations. Thereafter, by 2050 we will achieve net zero scope 1 and 2 Green House Gas emissions.


Thanks to ... Landfill Gas

At our Atlas Point manufacturing facility, we have found alternative energy sources to power our plant using solar panels and the conversion of landfill gas to heat and power. The landfill gas provides enough power to run 55 percent of plant operations, or about the equivalent of powering 3,500 homes.

In our New Castle, DE location solar panels help reduce our reliance on the local energy grids, helping to reduce our fossil fuel consumption. In Atlas Point, we have a solar field, located on a 2.5 acre open area on the property, as a ground mounted system approximately 775 kW in size.

Carbon Cover: 
We will enable the transition to a low-carbon economy. We will be Climate Positive, working closely with our customers to develop products that offer carbon saving benefits in use. By 2030, use of our products will avoid four times the carbon emissions associated with our business, our 4:1 carbon cover.

Thanks to ... Wind
Our manufacturing site in Hull, UK has managed to reduce its carbon emissions by around 55 % since 2000 partly due to the installation of a 2 MW wind turbine. Since the turbine was installed, the site’s imported electricity demand has also reduced and the turbine now supplies around 40 % of the site’s electricity requirements. At full output, the wind turbine will exceed the site’s requirements and electricity is exported to the national grid. Since 2000, energy and water consumption at Croda’s manufacturing facility in Hull has reduced by around 50% per unit of production.

Reducing Land Impact:

We will save more land than we use. We will increase agricultural land use efficiency, protect biodiversity and improve food security by sourcing sustainably and inspiring innovation. By 2030, the land area saved through the improved yields and crop resilience as a result of the use of our crop protection ingredients and seed treatment technologies will exceed that used to grow our raw materials.

Waste Reduction/Recycling:
We will protect the natural environment through the responsible management of our water consumption and waste production. By 2025, we will eliminate process waste to landfill across our operations.  By 2030, we will reduce our water use impact by 50% from our 2018 level.

Thanks to ... Bag in a Box program
As an alternative to using drums, which are costly and difficult to dispose of, we started shipping pastillated products in a sealed bag inside a cardboard box. The bag and cardboard box are made of recyclable materials, providing an environmentally advantageous option and reducing operational costs.

Croda ECO plant located in Atlas Point, Delaware manufacturing 100 biobased ethoxylates

Accelerating our sustainable future

Located at our Atlas Point manufacturing site in New Castle, DE, Croda’s bio-ethylene oxide plant, using licensed technology from Scientific Design Company, Inc, is the first bio-ethylene oxide plant constructed in the US for the manufacture of 100% renewable, 100% bio-based surfactants.

The 100% bio-based ECO Range is the widest range of 100% renewable surfactants on the market. By using an alternate route to EO with bioethanol from biomass sources, it significantly increases the bio-based content of ethoxylated products and reduces reliance on fossil fuels. Moreover, the ingredients are manufactured with renewable energy.

The ECO Range caters to the tremendous consumer need for greener products. Now, with the 100% renewable, 100% bio-based ECO Range, customers won’t have to choose between meeting their sustainability goals and delivering high performance products to consumers.
