Incense, also called oliban, is an aromatic oleo-gum-resin. The Indian Oliban is extracted from the ‘serrata’ genus and possesses a unique smell. Beneficial components are present in the resin that the tree naturally secretes to protect itself from parasites, insects and pathogenic agents. Used since Antiquity as incense, it was always appreciated for its healing virtues. the boswellia contains unique acids (boswellic acids) with powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Indeed its active ingredients inhibit 2 inflammation enzymes: the 5-lipoxygenase that generates inflammatory leukotrienes that lead to the formation of superoxide ions, rashes, itching and flaking; and the HLE (human leukocyte elastase) that triggers the inflammatory process and causes damage to the connective tissue leading to less firmness and elasticity.
