Bladderwrack is a brown seaweed, which forms a group of ribbon-like seaweeds, washed up by the tides and used as fertiliser. These algae constitute what is known as "goemon" or "kelp". It is easily recognisable thanks to its vesicles which allow it to float while remaining attached to the substrate. This seaweed is found in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, but also in the North and Baltic seas. For centuries, seaweed has been one of the main resources exploited on the foreshore (tidal zone), both for food and industrial purposes, to produce fertiliser and fuel. Bladderwrack is a seaweed with multiple benefits already used by the Romans to relieve joint pain. Bladderwrack has been included in the European pharmacopoeia for its high iodine content. It is a microcirculation stimulant, with moisturising properties, thanks to its polysaccharide content, and slimming properties thanks to its richness in iodine; it is used today to treat many ailments. Bladderwrack, with its beneficial properties, symbolises life.
